In a world of next-day delivery, trend cycles that last five minutes, and wardrobes overflowing with things we barely wear, choosing what we buy has become more important than ever.
At The Leather Store, I’ve always believed in making things differently. Not faster. Not cheaper. Just better.
Because while fashion trends come and go, a well-made leather bag becomes part of your everyday life. It travels with you, softens with age, carries the essentials, and quietly becomes more beautiful over time.
And that’s exactly why handmade still matters.
The Problem With Fast Fashion
Fast fashion has changed the way we shop. Clothing and accessories are often designed to be inexpensive, trend-led and short-lived. New collections appear constantly, encouraging us to buy more, wear less, and replace things quickly.
But there’s a downside to that cycle.
Mass-produced products are often made using lower-quality materials and rushed manufacturing methods, designed with price and speed in mind rather than longevity. The result? Bags that peel, crack, split, or lose their shape after a season or two.
And increasingly, many “leather-look” bags aren’t leather at all.
Terms like PU leather, vegan leather and faux leather may sound appealing, but in most cases they’re simply plastic-based materials designed to imitate the look of leather without the durability, repairability or lifespan of the real thing.
A well-made leather bag tells a completely different story.
We’ve Lost Our Emotional Connection to the Things We Own
I sometimes think that in today’s world of instant gratification, we’ve lost something important. We’ve stopped forming emotional connections with the things we buy.
Most of us can remember owning something we absolutely loved. Maybe it was a favourite leather jacket, a handbag you carried everywhere, or a pair of boots that became part of your everyday life.
You wore it constantly. It travelled with you. It became familiar and comfortable in a way that only happens over time.
And when it finally wore out, there was genuine sadness in letting it go.
That feeling is becoming rarer.
So many products today are designed to be temporary. Replaced before we’ve even had the chance to truly value them.
But beautifully made pieces are different. They become part of our stories. They carry memories with them. And perhaps that’s one of the reasons people still value handmade goods so deeply.
Why Real Leather Ages Beautifully
One of the things I love most about leather is that it changes over time.
Unlike synthetic materials, which often deteriorate with wear, quality leather develops character. It softens, deepens in colour, and develops a natural patina that reflects the life it’s lived.
The marks, creases and subtle changes become part of the bag’s story.
That’s why I’ve never believed handbags should look factory-perfect forever. A beautifully worn leather bag feels personal. Familiar. Loved.
And in many ways, that’s the opposite of fast fashion.
Handmade Craftsmanship Is Worth Preserving
One of the things people often forget is that traditional craftsmanship cannot simply be replaced overnight.
Many handmade skills are passed down through generations. They are learned slowly, through years of experience, observation and repetition. The small details, the techniques, the understanding of materials, these things are rarely written down in a manual or taught by machines.
They come from people.
And once those skills disappear, they are incredibly difficult to bring back.
That’s one of the reasons I feel so strongly about supporting craftsmanship and traditional leatherwork. Choosing handmade is about more than buying a bag. It’s about valuing the people, skills and experience behind it.
It’s about helping to keep those traditions alive in a world increasingly focused on speed and mass production
Handmade Means Thoughtful, Not Mass Produced
Every bag in my collection starts with practicality in mind.
I think about how it will feel to carry all day. Whether the straps will sit comfortably on your shoulder. Whether there are enough pockets for real life. Whether it works just as well on a dog walk as it does travelling through an airport or heading into town.
Because a good handbag shouldn’t just look nice in a photo. It should genuinely make everyday life easier.
That’s one of the reasons I’ve always been drawn to timeless, utility-led designs rather than trend-driven styles that date quickly.
My bags are designed to be used, not just admired.
Buying Less, But Buying Better
I think many of us are becoming more thoughtful about what we buy.
· Will I actually use this?
· Will it last?
· Does it work with my lifestyle?
· Is it well made?
· Will I still love it in five years?
That shift matters.
Because sustainability isn’t just about materials. It’s also about longevity.
A bag that’s carried daily for years has a very different environmental impact to one that’s discarded after a few months. Choosing fewer, better-made pieces is one of the simplest ways we can move away from throwaway culture.
And honestly, there’s something quite comforting about owning things that are made to last.
Why I Still Believe in Handmade
The Leather Store began back in 2008 with a simple idea: to create beautifully made leather bags that people would genuinely use and love for years.
That hasn’t changed.
I still care deeply about craftsmanship, quality materials and thoughtful design. I still get excited wrapping orders. I still believe people value authenticity and well-made things.
And perhaps now more than ever, handmade matters because it feels human.
In a world increasingly driven by algorithms, automation and disposable trends, there’s something special about choosing something created slowly, carefully and intentionally.
